Boise Council to Begin Process That Could Ban Smoking in Parks, Bars

Beginning Tuesday, Boise Mayor Dave Bieter and the City Council will begin a process that could see smoking banned in public locations-including bars and parks.

A 2010 Citizen Survey found that approximately 70 percent of Boise residents supported a smoking ban at indoor public places, including bars, while 54 percent supported a smoking ban in all public parks. The city has crafted two proposed ordinances, the first restricting smoking in bars, sidewalk cafes, private clubs and within 10 feet of bus stops. A second ordinance would prohibit smoking in all or part of Boise Parks, including the Greenbelt.

A City Council work session on the issue is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. A public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5. Another council work session is set for Tuesday, Oct. 11, and a final public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18.
