Janie Harris died Saturday. The Boise native who carried the musical legacy of her late husband, Gene Harris, into the 21st century passed away at St. Luke's Boise Medical Center, after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.
Gene and Janie Harris lured the greatest names in jazz music to perform in Boise: Lionel Hampton, Ramsey Lewis and scores of others. They hosted the Gene Harris Block Party in the 1990s and Janie Harris continued to play hostess to the Gene Harris Jazz Festival following her husband's death in January 2000. Harris also was host of a regular radio program, "Jazz Straight Ahead," on Boise State Public Radio. In 2005, she co-authored the biography, "Elegant Soul: The Life and Music of Gene Harris."
