Black Joe Lewis

Sight unseen, it would be easy to mistake Black Joe Lewis for one of James Brown's contemporaries--not only because Brown is obviously an influence but because Lewis sounds like he's been slinging his style of blues, funk and rock for years. He hasn't. Relative newbies to the industry, Lewis and his band (formerly The Honeybears) have a youthful energy that comes from being young, certainly, but also from being able to seamlessly meld classic and contemporary sounds. The band's latest release, Electric Slave (Vagrant Records, Aug. 2013), foreshadows a faraway future in which people are still listening to Black Joe Lewis and still talking about his ability to sound familiar and fresh.
