Big Juds - Mother's Day Brunch - Lunch at the Lock

Idaho's State Burger

What's Idaho's best burger? According to the Food Network Magazine, it's the Big Jud Special at none other than Big Jud's.

A few months ago, the FNM people called the BW people and asked us what we thought was the state's patty most worthy of the title. Finding it entirely impossible to offer up just one, our people sent their people a list to choose from. Seriously, how could we choose a doublewide at Donnie Mac's over the sliders at Pair over the bacon/cheddar at Bittercreek over the big-as-your-head Big Jud Special? We couldn't—that's why we left it up to the impartial out-of-state FNM peeps.

Good news is, BW readers seem to have a similar opinion. Big Jud's won Boise's Best Burger in Boise Weekly's 2005 Best of Boise. Think there's a better hunk of meat between two buns out there? Write it down so you'll remember when it comes time to vote for 2009's best burger. BOB voting starts online in a mere two months.

Big Jud's, 1289 Protest Road, 208-343-4439.

Bakery On the Go, Maybe

Sounds like I'll have to file the case of the missing croissants in the "complete mystery of the universe" file. Those who caught last week's installment of Food News may remember that I'd ordered a couple of croissants from Le Cafe de Paris to be delivered to my doorstep Tuesday morning, but they pulled a no-show. Long story short: The bakery has not discontinued its delivery service, but it's still working out a few kinks in the system. Visit to place your order, and if you're worried about getting stood up, call the bakery to confirm—even if you get an e-mail confirmation. When I have the time to do both, I'll try again and let you know how it goes.

Lock, Stock and No Smoking Guns

I consume thousands of calories on BW's behalf. I also use BW "research" as an excuse to consume calories I don't necessarily need, but that I think are appropriate to have first-hand experience of (see above blurb on the great croissant delivery debacle). Last week, for example, I bellied up at the bar at Lock, Stock and Barrel and ate my way through a filet mignon, crab legs, a loaded baked potato, bread and a salad. And I didn't need a to-go box. I went big because it was the first opportunity I'd had to use my BW Card, which means my $90 meal cost me only $58. Don't know about the BW Card? You should, unless, of course, you don't like the idea of saving money. Log onto and click on the big, square button on the right side of the homepage that says "BW CARD."

While at the Lock, I got the lowdown on the new lunch menu. Unlike the dinner menu, lunch is all about the sandwich. Highlights based on name alone include the Tommy Boy chicken sandwich with Swiss, bacon, onion, tomato and spinach on ciabatta, and the burger worthy of—if nothing else—the title of best named burger in Idaho: "The Goat Choker," with a 12-ounce patty, ham, bacon, Cheddar, sauteed onions, a fried egg and a warning that says "not for the timid."
