In the wake of the State of Idaho jacking up land appraisals at Idaho's 522 lakeside cabins in McCall and Priest Lake, some leaseholders have chosen to walk away from their longtime cabin sites.
Along Payette Lake in McCall, the Idaho Department of Lands is estimating that only 41 percent of lessees had renewed their agreements with the state as of last week. the number is even lower at Priest Lake with only about 24 percent renewing. Lessees have until Tuesday, April 30, to apply, thereby agreeing to higher lease rates.
But some lease holders say they're not prepared to walk away nor pay the higher rate. In fact, they're suing the State of Idaho.
The Bonner County Daily Bee reports that lawsuits were filed April 18 and April 19 in 1st District Court representing 353 cabin lessees. The suits name the Idaho Land Board, which comprises some of Idaho's top state elected officials, and the Idaho Department of Lands, arguing that the higher rate structure is flawed.
While some lessees face an increase of as little as 14 percent, others face lease rate increases as high as 118 percent, depending on the location of the land.
