Bars & Stripes, Best of Boise and a Day Off

Most Americans look forward to national holidays with the same kind of enthusiasm as a kid on his way to the local animal shelter to pick out a pet. For many of us, it's usually just another work day. Sometimes, though, we get lucky.

Because the Fourth of July falls on a Tuesday this year, we're going to press Monday, July 3, and then shutting the doors at BWHQ and taking Tuesday, July 4, off.

If you're looking for ideas on how to celebrate Independence Day, check out Page 8. If McCall is your holiday Mecca, one of our summer interns, Sophia Angleton, got the skinny on what is banned and what restrictions have loosened up a bit. Read about it on Page 7. However you celebrate, please be safe. On Page 6, another of our summer interns, Savannah Cardon, has the lowdown on illegal fireworks in Idaho, how one Boise politician would like to see the laws change and Boise Fire Chief Dennis Doan's concerns—News Editor George Prentice has more with the always candid chief on Page 22

But before we get all red, white and blue, we are sending cyclists spinning around town in our Bars & Stripes alleycat race scavenger hunt. With our friends Bikes 2 Boards, we're bringing back this popular contest on Saturday, July 1. Playing is simple: Register this week at BWHQ—we're open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays—or on race day, beginning at 11 a.m. The fee to enter Bars & Stripes is $25, which nets you a sweet backpack and a manifest. At high noon, you'll open your manifest and head out to 10 of our favorite bars in Boise, where you'll perform a task, answer a question or pick up an item in order to get your manifest stamped. The first person at the finish line (the location is on the manifest), which is also where the after party is, with all of his or her stamps wins. We have amazing prizes and giveaways, so even if you don't win, you still win.

In other BW news, nominations for our annual Best of Boise edition open Wednesday, June 28. Visit bob.boiseweekly.com, or text BoiseWeekly to 77948 to nominate your favorite people, places and things, so they secure a spot in our BOB voting.

Happy racing, happy voting and happy celebrating!
