24821 N. Mountain View Drive


If it was not for my bi-weekly recycling trip, I would probably never get to this part of town, even with living in a relatively small town like Boise; work and play only require me to venture a few miles from my house, which is great but often leaves me at a loss for what is going on in the rest of my town. So when I saw this property, I hopped into my car (no way was I going to try and bike on those crazy roads!) and headed out to West Boise. This particular section of Mountain View Drive lies on the west side of Glenwood as you come up the hill and views far fewer traffic than the east portion, which often is used as a alternate route to Ustick and Curtis roads.

The 1970s rambling ranch sits on a half-acre on the south side of Mountain View. Fortunately in this particular section of the street, there are no houses on the north side, so there are unobstructed views to the Foothills and will probably stay that way for some time as the area is steep and relatively unbuildable. This area also provides a buffer from the businesses below. The house is a single story clad in vertical board and batten siding, painted sky blue with white window trim and fascia.

The entry is slightly recessed and understated-no glorifying of it with doo-dads and fakery that is common in most new homes, which just looks ridiculous. I am not sure what has prompted such behavior-it all seemed to happen in the '80s-about the same time that "great rooms" became the in thing ... I loathe the "great room." Excuse the slight digression, back to the ranch! The stained wood paneled entry door opens into a small foyer that has wonderful stone flooring (perhaps Arizona Flagstone). The heart of this ranch is the massive brick fireplace in the living room. The room has hardwood floors, exposed wood beams (stained a soft green) and walls clad in a mix of gorgeous wood paneling and some leafy patterned wallpaper.

Just off of the living room and through a pair of bi-folding doors lies the family room-more wood floor, ceilings and walls and some funky wallpaper. A den/office sits just off of this room, all the same décor with the exception of the red carpet, a perfect cocktail and poker room set-up!

The kitchen is U-shaped and lined with plenty of oak cabinet storage, tiled countertops and appliances ranging from avocado to white (what's with that?) The dining area has blue carpeting and yellow-orange flowered wallpaper-yikes! There are some great wood built-ins, none of that oak-paneled crap, just simple, plain-fronted stained cabinets.

One of the three bedrooms is accessed directly off of the entry, it seems a bit odd considering the hallway is right there. The master bedroom has its own bath and also direct access to another room, which has a Jacuzzi tub and a sink, another odd set-up.

The backyard is primarily grass but has an enormous maple tree tucked close to the house providing shade from the hot summer sun. There are two out buildings, a concrete block greenhouse and large workshop. A well provides irrigation and drinking water for the property.

PROS: Convenient location (depending on where you are coming from). Huge lot and the deep front yard provides added privacy for the bedrooms and other spaces. I have to believe that the carpet is just preserving some beautiful hardwood floors and is ready to be removed. Storage galore-inside and out. Bye-bye city water and all those seasonal rate hikes!

CONS: An awful lot of lawn to keep green and mow, even with that cheap water. But there are plenty of opportunities to landscape the area to reduce watering requirements. It does need some work, but don't despair, most of it is all cosmetic, relatively cheap and painless-but that wallpaper will be a bear to remove. And possibly expensive.
