In case Treefort (or "Treeort," as the festival program spelled it) has sucked all the air from the Boise musical atmosphere, I remind you that the Gene Harris Jazz Festival is this week—Wednesday, April 1-Thursday, April 2 on the Boise State University campus.
It used to be something quite bigger, back when Gene was part of it. Even in matters that weren't named in his honor he had that effect... to make things seem quite bigger merely by his presence.
These days, the festival seems to be little more than an annual reminder that there are more kinds of musical instruments in the world than guitar, and that music without lyrics is still music.
It's been 15 years since Gene was a part of it. January, 2000, that's when he died. Like with all dearly departed we remember fondly and vividly, it's hard to believe it's been that long.
