Improv Comedy Cage Match Sets Stage for Boise's Funniest Person Final Round

Emcee Sean Hancock took the stage at Liquid the evening of Aug. 1 to tell the audience that this had been the most closely contested installment of the Improv Comedy Cage Match in the three-year history of the event.
The final competition, between Pocatello-based The Comedy Project and Boise-based Sausage Party of 5, pitted two vastly different improv troupes against each other; but, to the audience, there was little surprise when it was announced that The Comedy Project would go home with a $1,000 prize and a $1,000 booking contract at Liquid Laughs.

The Comedy Project hit the stage first, organizing its act around simple questions posed to the audience, like "What was your 21st birthday like?" and "Are you a dog or a cat person?" The troupe was able to create a unique and entertaining array of situations without losing the attention of the audience, and benefited from being able to flesh out more elaborate skits while stressing the talents of individual Comedy Project members.

Notable examples included a lengthy comparison between binge watching Netflix and using hard drugs, and exploring emotions with an existential robot and millennials living in their parents' basements. A particular audience favorite was a skit delving into the psychopathy of step siblings.

Sausage Party of 5, by contrast, chewed through its skits so fast that the audience had trouble keeping up—so much so that several jokes were simply lost. Some notably underserving bits included asking questions of a Sphinx made up of three members of the troupe, and a self-explanatory skit titled "Everything's Better with Sean Connery."

Ultimately, SPo5, champion of last year's competition, relied too heavily on two members' uncommon gifts of gab and fluid humor, making its performance uneven.

The show, however, must go on. Watch the final round of Boise's Funniest Person at Liquid Laughs, Saturday, Aug. 2, at 8 p.m. That's when Brett Kennedy, Merry Cole, Tommy Chartier, Gabe Hess and Kaz Gable will square off for $1,000 and immortal—well at least year-long—fame as the funniest person in the City of Trees.
