In the comics and Saturday morning cartoon, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles hid from humanity in the sewers because they assumed that most people wouldn't understand why four turtles could talk or regularly thwart Shredder and the Foot Clan's shenanigans. Apart from being anthropomorphic turtles, they were pretty inoffensive.
That's why it was such a surprise when, on an Australian teaser poster for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
film produced by Michael Bay, they were shown hurtling down the side of an exploding building over the film's Sept. 11, 2014, release date in Australia, inadvertently alluding to the 2001 terrorist attack that felled the Twin Towers in New York City.
This poster design had been used earlier
to promote the film in an Asian market, where it has a release date of Aug. 7, indicating that the teaser wasn't malicious, but if turtles could blush, you could bet their cheeks would be as red as Rafael's mask.
