On Oct. 30, 1938, a 23-year-old Orson Welles directed and narrated a dramatization of the H.G. Wells classic, The War of the Worlds, for CBS Radio's The Mercury Theatre on the Air. The future film actor and director's delivery was so convincing, thousands of Americans believed Martians had invaded the Earth.

The PBS documentary, War of the Worlds, offers insight into one of the most famous radio broadcasts in American history. Watch it online: PBS' War of the Worlds.
