Historical secrets are some of the most entertaining kinds. All secrets lend themselves to riveting storytelling, but historical ones have the added quality of being immersive: Uncovering a mystery from, say, 19th century Idaho can inspire us to imagine what it was like to keep something hidden in a time when there were no cars or telephones—just word of mouth.
