Is M. Night Shyamalan 'Back' with After Earth?

Were assuming this image is M. Night Shyamalans depiction of Bogus Basin.

Because of his overuse of "the twist," M. Night Shyamalan's films went downhill after his initial success with The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable.

In fact, some of his movies were so dubious, it was never clear why he kept getting hired to make new ones.

But the just-released trailer for his new film After Earth might, possibly, represent his return to relevance.

Sure, sure, the film—a crash-landed father and son team of astronauts fighting for survival—looks like his version of Avatar meets Planet of the Apes. Sure, it stars not only Will Smith, but his son Jaden Smith. And sure, it is an M. Night Shyamalan film. But here's the thing: He frontloads the twist. The planet is Earth, a place long-abandoned by humanity in the world of the film.

It could end up as another great setup that gets Shyamalan-ed into corniness, but front-loading the twist might just be the thing his work needs.
