LipsInc! Brings the Beach to Boise

LipsInc! may need to change its name. While the moniker does provide a bit of clever wordplay, the lip-syncing skills of Idaho's first professional female impersonation troupe are the last thing audience members notice during one of its dazzling shows. This was apparent most recently at Beach Babes, which opened Friday and will continue tonight at the Balcony Club.

Martini, Victoria and newcomer Nikoa Mac presented a show filled with all the LipsInc! staples: It opened with a slideshow of photos of the performers, Martini used her standard line, "The more you drink, the better we look," and the show employed plenty of feathers, men with chiseled abs in skimpy outfits, sequins and enviously big hair.

The show opened with the ladies pretending to waterski in Baywatch-worthy one-pieces, ditching the requisite high heels for water shoes. They also wore sequin-and-feather headdresses, which were later revealed to be made by the stars themselves, using a shopping bag as a base.

Victoria then regaled audiences with a rendition of "Under the Boardwalk," distributing leis to various attendees.

And then the crowd went wild when the infamous guest star took the stage. Minerva Jayne smiled and twirled to "It's Too Darn Hot," clad in a glittering sailor outfit and giant blonde curls. Cries of "I love you, Minerva!" echoed throughout the evening.

Attendees were giggling profusely during Martini's more-literal interpretation of Britney Spears' "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman," which used an accessory from an adult shop. The evening ran the gamut from over-the-top glamour, with long leopard-print dresses and lots of jewels, to impossibly thin Mac's interpretations of Rihanna tunes set in front of music-video-style shots of the performer that employed a lot of hip thrusts. Jayne's interpretation of "Stupid Hoe" by Nicki Minaj was entertaining even for those whose ears usually resist the pop icon's songs.

The final number, which brought the three LipsInc! members to the stage in beach chairs and animal-print swimsuits, was followed by a brief question-and-answer session, during which one likely intoxicated audience member had jaws dropping when she asked: "Where do you put it?"

The performers came back with a witty response about "why drag queens smile when they sit down," and the rest of the questions revolved around Jayne's upcoming projects and where to buy shoes.

Tonight's show will take place at 8:30 p.m. at the Balcony Club. Reservations can be made by calling 208-368-0405. The troupe's last three Saturday performances had a waiting list, so reservations are recommended. LipsInc! will also present a show at Boise State in September.
