After Sunday’s Sasquatch Music Fest blog was filed, I met my friend on the hill of The Gorge for Blind Pilot. The band's sound was mellow, like something suitable for a road trip.
The pit cleared of the indie band’s fans and filled with a new group of hip-hop junkies for Chiddy Bang. I wiggled to the front of the crowd and snapped a photo before I was kicked out by security when they saw my point-and-shoot. I was still able to join the crowd as Chiddy Bang got the group dancing and jumping to the beat of the drums—people’s bouncing hands looked like a human wave.
I went back up to the hill for M. Ward, singing along with “Never Had Nobody Like You” and “Chinese Translation.” My friend kept checking the time: The Head and the Heart were up next and she wanted to be on the ground. I only know “Lost In My Mind,” but I found it easy to sway with the singalong crowd that had collected at the band’s feet. At that point, it was the best set I had seen at Sasquatch.
We took a break for The Walkmen on the Bigfoot Stage, sitting just behind the crowd and watching the show from screens on the side of the stage. As I expected, they were excellent and energetic.
Back at the Main Stage, we listened to Beirut while waiting for Bon Iver. I thought hearing Beirut's soft sound live gave new meaning to its music.
As the sun set, it got much colder. My friend wanted to be on the floor again, and though my feet were killing me, I didn’t complain because the crowd guaranteed heat.
While Bon Iver’s music is soft and his voice is quiet, at full volume, it captured the crowd. As the biggest headliner of the festival, Bon Iver didn’t disappoint and closed with four encore songs. Everyone sang along to “Skinny Love” and “For Emma.”
I wanted to stay for Jon Gooch of Feed Me, a dupstep/techno DJ, but the mood was off. I headed back to camp with the group and everyone was quiet.
