We've written about Boise band Shades through much of its recent emergence on the Boise music scene. With its January debut, Clear Motions, and its Treefort set alongside Araabmuzik, the foursome has been associated with a new wave of local acts, including Youth Lagoon, Atomic Mama and Mozam.
Shades is comprised of David Mikkelson on echoey vocals, and Louie Bash, Mikael Barnes and Tom Racine switch between digital and analog instruments, with a bevy of effects pedals and synths.
The result is a brand of ethereal electronic music called "chillwave," pioneered by groups like Washed Out and Memory Tapes.
Now Shades hopes to move toward a more analog sound on its next EP, said Barnes. To that end, the band will play fewer shows while it works on honing a new sound and a new stage presence.
We caught up with Shades at a Treefort Decompression Party on April 4 for episode No. 45 of Scenes from a Scene.
