Law enforcement will not be happy with Rampart, which had its premiere today at the Toronto International Film Festival. Woody Harrelson plays Dave Brown, the dirtiest of dirty cops working out of L.A.'s infamous Rampart division. The film opens with Harrelson's Brown delivering a brutal beat-down of a hit and run driver. Brown’s misdeeds go downhill from there. Hopped up on barbituates, vodka and non-stop nicotine, Brown stakes a claim for his own personal corner of hell with racism, blackmail and murder. Unfortunately, director Oren Moverman (The Messenger) doesn’t leave Harrelson’s powerhouse performance alone. Layer upon layer of mayhem proves just too overwhelming. In the end, I was exhausted rather than engaged
Harrelson is surrounded by impressive co-stars: Sigourney Weaver, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Robin Wright and Ned Beatty. Harrelson's chilling performance won't be forgotten. Unfortunately the story will.
