Sun Valley's Trent Herbst completed the "The Last Great Race on Earth," better known as the Alaskan Iditarod, on Thursday. He came in 25th place. Herbst, who teaches at Sun Valley's Community School, finished the 1,000-plus mile race in 10 days, 12 hours and 16 minutes. His average speed was about 4.5 mph.
Herbst traveled on a sled built by his students. This year's "sled extras" included solar panels to power a GPS, iPod and head lamp. His students also made about 300 boots for the sled dogs.
When BW spoke to Herbst in February, he told us he thought he had one more race in him.
