Perhaps most famous for his composition “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” ’70s and ’80s spoken-word artist Gil Scott-Heron has had a wide-reaching influence on hip-hop. Now that influence is spreading to electronic indie pop.
Jamie Smith, from the Mercury prize-winning British band The XX, teamed up with Scott-Heron to remix his recent comeback album, 2010’s I’m New Here. The album, titled We’re New Here, layers Scott-Heron’s gruff vocals with Smith’s signature sparse spacey beats and tops it off with some obscure R&B samples.
