Boise-based jazz musician Curtis Stigers is one such someone. His musical accomplishments are numerous and growing:
Stigers recently performed his version of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" on live TV at the Jazz Echo Awards in Bochum, Germany. He adds German Phono Academy's International Male Jazz Singer of the Year and an ASCAP songwriting award for "This Life" (the theme of the critically acclaimed FX show Sons of Anarchy) to his trophy shelf and performed from "The John Lennon Songbook" with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in honor of what would have been the late musician's 70th birthday.
Even with all of his globe-trotting, Stigers can be counted on to bring it back home for Boise audiences. On Monday, Nov. 15, Stigers and his band—Matthew Fries, Keith Hall, Cliff Schmitt and John Sneider—will play their final concert of the year at the Egyptian Theatre. Tickets are $30 and are available at The Boise Co-op, The Record Exchange or through brownpapertickets.com. But hurry; his shows usually sell out fast.
I knew all of that. But in what may not be new information to some, Stigers is not only a rock star, he's a TV star, too.
Stigers has a huge following in Europe and part of that popularity may stem from the fact that he could be considered a British TV star.
He was a panelist on the silly game show Shooting Stars, and in 2006—in the vein of Dancing with the Stars—Stigers starred on the BBC Television reality show, Just the Two of Us, in which professional singers were paired with celebrities. Stigers and British newscaster Penny Smith made it all the way to No. 4 before the show's judges (including The Police's Stewart Copeland) voted them off.
Just when you think you know someone. It's a good thing he still calls Boise home or we might never get a chance to see him.
Reminder: Solo Stigers will be joined by a number of local musical luminaries in December for his annual holiday charity concert, the Xtreme Holiday Xtravaganza on Dec. 19 and Dec. 20, at the Egyptian Theatre. Visit curtisstigers.com for more information.
