We’re super jazzed to see all the free gardening class options offered this season. The new North End Organic Nursery is rolling out a crazy variety of classes every weekend and FarWest Garden Center has started offering free Saturday seminars—with titles like “Pruning” and “The Amazing Blueberry.”

Unfortunately, some of us, cough, have a hard time getting out of bed before 10 a.m. on a Saturday. Luckily, there’s a new option for lazy novice gardeners. The Foothills Learning Center is now hosting free monthly classes on vegetable gardening, which run Tuesday evenings from 6-7 p.m., starting tomorrow, Tuesday, March 9. Here’s the complete schedule:

March 9-Prepare raised beds and plant potatoes and onions

April 13-Planting cold crops and greens (i.e. peas, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, radishes, lettuce and spinach)

May 11-How to attract pollinators with annuals

June 15-Beneficial bugs

July 13-Tackling trellising

August 17-Harvest for upcoming produce sale at FarWest (proceeds go to Foothills Learning Center’s Junior Garden Camp)

September 14-Green manure, cover crops and composting

October 12-Putting the garden to bed and getting the garlic growing

To get to the Foothills Learning Center, take Eighth Street north to Hulls Gulch Reserve. From the end of the pavement, go 1/3 mile farther. For information, call 493-2530 or visit BoiseEnvironmentalEducation.org.
