The Old Idaho Penitentiary fundraiser, Bars Under the Stars, is Friday, July 10, from 6:30-10 p.m. The event was mistakenly listed under Thursday on the Picks Page in this week's Boise Weekly … we regret the error and the culprit will be sent directly to solitary confinement.
At Bars Under the Stars, guests are invited to dress up in their best stripes and spend the evening as a prisoner. Guests wear nametags with inmate numbers and statistics from actual prisons who took a permanent vacation at the Old Idaho Penitentiary including name, age and crime.
During behind-the-scenes tours, learn some history, hear ghost stories and listen to tales of executions and escapes. The event will leave a lasting impression on guests if they choose to commemorate the evening by getting a prison tattoo or pose for a mug shot behind bars. Pay $10 more to go on a flashlight tour after dark through the spooky concrete buildings. Guests sip on a special prisoner Squawky brew made by Highlands Hollow Brewhouse crafted after the prisoners’ habit of using anything they could find to make moonshine including tomato paste, canned peaches or fruit that had fallen from trees. The brewers have their pick of material to make the re-creation of the Squawky brew and it will taste good. The event features music by the Rockin’ Hippies and a barbecue dinner by Highlands Hollow that will be served on authentic prison dinnerware. Tickets are available at the Old Pen or on the Web site.
6:30-10 p.m., $50 each, or $60 with flashlight tour, Old Idaho Penitentiary, 2445 Old Penitentiary Road, 208-334-2844, idahohistory.net.
