Some are obvious like when the sunset turns the clouds pink and the Foothills look velvety, or when you reach that perfect level of nervanic contentment as you lounge on some downtown patio sipping drinks with friends on a warm summer evening.
Others are not as obvious. Earlier today I was hoofing it through downtown on a mission to find some lunch. I was chatting on my cell phone with my sister as I made my way past businessmen desperately loosening their ties and families navigating the sidewalks on bikes.
Just as I was passing Boise City Hall, out pops Mayor Dave Bieter, his shirt sleeves rolled up in the afternoon heat. As I passed, I waved a greeting and he returned it with a smile. My Portland, Ore.-based sister on the other end of the laughed when she realized who I was talking to and asked if there were any good scandals befalling the mayor of Boise like the ones plaguing the mayor of Portland.
After pausing a minute, I realized that, nope, there aren’t. It’s actually kind of nice to have a politician you’re not complaining about.
