Closed Primary Bill Introduced

The push for closed primaries is on.

Idaho Republican Party Chairman J. Kirk Sullivan introduced a bill to the Senate State Affairs Committee this morning that would force primary elections to be open to registered party members only.

It's a much-talked-about issue that many expected to see, but maybe not in the form they would have preferred. Sullivan's bill would require the state to re-register every voter (at an estimated cost of $800,000) and would not allow independent voters to participate.

Even the Republican leadership seem cautious of this approach, fearing alienating independents, who make up a large percentage of Idaho voters.

Even Rod Beck, the former legislator who led the charge to force closed primaries, doesn't like the bill.
