Larry Craig Sells Art

No, not the guy himself. It's called "irony," people.

We're talking about the idea of Craig. Specifically, the idea of Craig as a cowboy...on a movie poster...a movie called, Gunfight at Brokeback Outhouse.

It all went down at the 2007 Boise Weekly Cover Art Auction, held last night at the Idaho Historical Museum. We sold off all the original cover art from the last year of BW covers.

Initial math done on a tequila-soaked cocktail napkin shows that we pulled in $15,116 which includes $241 from raffle sales. The money will go toward the creation of a new local arts grant. Not bad when you consider that, in the six years we've been doing this auction, we've raised about $50,000 for local art projects. (Last year, we raised $13,175.)

Bidding was hot and heavy, especially after we cleverly set the thermostat in the Idaho Historical Museum to "sweltering." The shots of Patron we offered to higher bidders didn't hurt either.

Johnna Wells was once again our hotshot auctioneer, gently coaxing people to bid with lines like, "It feels good to spend your money, doesn't it?"

For four wild hours, people bid fiercely on pieces by local artists such as Bill Carman, Grant Olsen, Ben Wilson, Mike Flinn and Nancy Brossman, to name a few. All of them appeared on the cover of BW at one time or another.

Bid prices were all over the map. A few notable biggies: a bidder walked away with Kelly Knopp's incredible cover Heart Strings, which appeared on our July 25 issue, for $900. Hoots and hollers ensued.

But it was Gunfight at Brokeback Outhouse, the piece by mystery artist Timothy Shawn Burnicle, that was the night's big attraction.

The piece, which made light of the sex scandal involving U.S. Sen. Larry Craig, was the second-to-last piece to go up for bid. Apparently, we saved the best for last.

The piece sold for $1,900 to Sarah Read, of Boise, who won a fierce bidding competition to nail the prize.

"This is my first auction," a proud Read said after snaring the winning bid. "I really liked that one. When I saw it in person, I knew."

Congrats to Read and the other auction winners, and thanks for playing. Your generosity and excitement have helped create a vibrant new source of funding to local artists in this great art town of ours.

To the artists who make us look so good week after week, thank you and thank you again.

We're already prepping for next year's auction. As soon as this Advil kicks in, that is.
