First West Nile Death Reported

West Nile has claimed its first victim in Idaho this year.

A Payette County woman died of complications from West Nile earlier this week according to the Central District Health Department.

The woman, in her 70s, was one of 103 reported cases of the disease in the state this year. It’s a marked decrease from last year, when there were more than 1,000 reported infections and 23 West Nile-related deaths—the most in the county.

While cooler weather is cutting down on the number of mosquitoes, they are still active, and CDH officials ask that everyone take precautions, including covering exposed skin and using approved insect repellents.
