California law enforcement officials report they have cracked a 33-year-old cold case with the arrest of an Idaho man in the murder of a 6-year-old boy.
Los Angeles television station KTLA reports
that 53-year-old Kenneth Rasmuson was taken into custody at his Sandpoint home and is awaiting extradition where he'll face trial for the strangulation of 6-year-old Jeffrey Vargo, whose body was discovered at a Pamona, Calif., construction site in July 1981, a day after he was last seen on his bicycle. Rasmuson is currently being held in the Bonner County Jail.
“We have mixed emotions,” Connie Vargo, Jeffrey’s mother, told the Orange County Register.
“After 33 years, someone is finally caught. This person took so much of our lives and now that he’s been arrested, hopefully, justice will be served so he can’t hurt anyone else.”
Rasmuson has a lengthy criminal record, dating back to a 1981 conviction for molesting an 11-year-old child and the 1987 abduction and molestation of a 3-year-old boy. The Orange County Register
reports that Rasmuson was granted a conditional release from prison in 2007 and "bounced around California, Washington and Oregon before settling in Idaho in 2010."
Investigators say it was DNA evidence that finally linked Rasmuson to Vargo's death.
