Law enforcement in north central Idaho are still trying to piece together details of a barroom brawl which resulted in one man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that the incident occurred March 26 at the Wrangler Bar in Lewiston. Witnesses told police that two men were drinking at the 21st Street bar when they got into a heated argument. Police said punches were thrown before one of the men allegedly pulled a small-caliber handgun and pumped three shots into 49-year-old Benjamin Phares of Lewiston, at least one of them at point-blank range. Phares underwent surgery at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and was later upgraded from critical to serious condition.

The Tribune reports that one of the witnesses recorded the incident on a cellphone video and according to police, Phares was threatening the gunman before the shooting. Lewiston Police have yet to identify the gunman, who was also taken to the hospital for a head injury. No charges have yet been filed in the incident.
