Classes are canceled at several northern Idaho schools today so that staff and students are able to attend the funeral of a woman who was accidentally shot and killed by her toddler son in December.

Veronica Rutledge, 29, was shopping with her 2-year-old son at a Hayden Wal-Mart on the day after Christmas when the child, sitting in the front of her shopping cart, reached into Rutledge's purse, found her loaded handgun in a zippered pocket and fired the weapon.

Rutledge was 2004 valedictorian of her graduating class at Kootenai High School near Coeur d'Alene. She attended North Idaho College, got married in 2009 and graduated from the University of Idaho in 2010, majoring in chemistry. Ultimately, she became a nuclear research scientist, working at the Idaho National Laboratory.
