ACHD Crews Prepare to Stay Ahead of Coming Storm With 'Mag'

While ski resorts rejoice, area motorists cringe as another Christmas week weather-maker is heading to the region. The National Weather Service office in Boise has issued a winter weather advisory, in effect through Sunday evening.

The weather service indicates that up to a 6 inches of new snow is expected to be dumped on Boise area mountains with a few inches expected on valley floors. Light snow will begin to fall by Saturday afternoon and much heavier snow is expected through the evening. A winter storm warning is in effect for the Sun Valley region, where up to a foot of new snow could fall on Galena Summit.

In anticipation of the new snow, the Ada County Highway District has ordered its crews to treat roadways with magnesium chloride (aka "mag") today, before the snow falls. From there, ACHD crews are expected to tackle the snow with sand and salt

ACHD's winter maintenance crew includes 125 people who work alternating shifts, operating sanders, salt and deicing trucks, and 23 snow plows across 2,200 miles of local roads.
