Officials at Your Health Idaho
say they're prepared to extend this month's deadline to secure a health insurance policy on the state's new exchange. Traditionally, consumers must complete their application by the 15th of the month in order to have a policy that is effective on the first of the following month.
But at least for December, Your Health Idaho says Idahoans will have until Saturday, Dec. 20, to apply for a a new or renewed policy that would begin on Jan. 1, 2015.
Additionally, Your Health Idaho officials say consumers have until midnight tonight, December 15 to apply for a tax credit to help cover some of their health insurance costs. Applications need to be submitted by midnight.
“Our mission is to ensure all Idahoans who want health insurance have the opportunity to enroll in a plan,” said Your Health Idaho Executive Director Pat Kelly. “Extending the deadline until Dec. 20 gives Idahoans extra time to receive their tax eligibility and find a plan that is right for them and their families.”
Boise Weekly sat down with Kelly in November
to talk about this year being the first opportunity for Idaho to manage the process with its own state-run exchange.
"I'll quote a great basketball coach, John Wooden: 'Play fast, but don't hurry.' People have heard me say this more than once. We're going at a pace that is very fast but we should never hurry. We want to be very prudent with our decisions, making sure that we're reaching out to our stakeholders and working within the proper framework. When you hurry, you tend to forget those things."
