A suspicious package near propane gas tanks triggered evacuations and a traffic detour—pushing vehicles away from Rexburg's Main Street—on Monday afternoon.
that the incident began when a package with a digital lock was spotted outside of Alpine Propane in downtown Rexburg. That prompted the Madison County Sheriff's Office to shut down a portion of Main Street. The Idaho Falls Bomb Squad was summoned to the scene to remove the package, which later was discovered to be a digital safe.
"Due to a recent explosion in nearby Jackson Hole, Wyo., we did not want to compromise the safety of the community, which was why we called the local authorities," Shane Johnson, general manager of the propane company, wrote in a statement to the media. "We are grateful no one was injured, and appreciate the prompt response from the local authorities and emergency response personnel."
