Law enforcement in the Oregon coastal city of Newport reached out to the Coast Guard to search the town's bay with boats and a helicopter after a woman said she had thrown her 6-year-old son off a bridge. Indeed, a short time later, the boy's body was discovered in the water.
Jillian McCabe, 34, of Seal Rock, Ore., was immediately booked on a charge of murder and is being held on $750,000 bail. The Associated Press reports that the woman was also charged with suspicion of aggravated murder and manslaughter. Police are still looking for anyone who may have seen the woman or child on the bridge in the late afternoon or early evening hours of Nov. 3. The woman called 911 at 6:25 p.m. saying she had thrown her son off the Yaquina Bay Bridge and his body was discovered at 10:23 p.m.
The AP says that the Yaquina Bay Bridge is listed on the national Register of Historic Places.
