The Idaho Department of Finance has hit a California collection agency with a cease and desist order, following reports that a bill for toner cartridges had started at $339 but ballooned to $18,500. In fact, the Idaho company that was targeted by the collection agency said it hadn't even ordered any toner.
The IDOF cease and desist was ordered against Legal and Debt Recovery from Orange, Calif., and its legal counsel, D. Scott Carruthers, operating out of Stanton, Calif.
The Idaho company that was targeted by the collection agency was also hit with the threat of a lawsuit if it did not pay the $18,500, in spite of disputing the bill.
"When it involves unscrupulous and unlicensed collection attempts, we recommend that you contact the Idaho Department of Finance," said Department of Finance Director Gavin Gee.
