Body of Base Jumper Discovered Near Glacier's Mount Siyeh

The body of a BASE jumper was recovered Sept. 14 in Glacier National Park after authorities said he may have attempted an illegal jump.

This morning's Missoulian reports that the family of 22-year-old Beau Weiher of Missoula contacted authorities Sept. 13 when he was overdue from a hike. A park spokeswoman said family and friends indicated Weiher may have BASE jumped in Glacier.

Park rangers found evidence of Weiher in some of the snowy terrain of Mount Siyeh and an aerial search spotted a parachute before coming upon Weiher's body.

BASE jumping is prohibited in most national parks and the Missoulian reports that 243 people have died attempting BASE jumps since 1981.
