A North Idaho 5-year-old spent most of the weekend in a hospital after being attacked by a pit bull in the tiny Benewah County town of De Smet.
"The dog did a lot of damage in a very short amount of time," the boy's father, Vince Peone, told KREM-TV.
"Nobody even heard it."
The child's family claims that while the boy was visiting his aunt's home, a neighbor was "rough housing" with the animal across the street, when the animal suddenly charged and attacked the child.
The 5-year-old lost part of an ear and sustained serious head wounds. He was treated at Kootenai Health Medical Center in Plummer and released on Sunday.
Family members said the dog was euthanized by its owner following the attack. Officials with the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Police say an investigation is ongoing.
