The North Idaho city of Sandpoint was rocked this morning by the shooting death of a woman outside Bonner General Hospital Tuesday night. The woman, who police said was armed with a knife, was shot and killed by local law enforcement.
KREM-TV reports that the incident began as a so-called "weapons call" around 9 p.m. Pacific Time, and witnesses said there were gunshots and heavy police activity around 3rd Avenue and Alder Street in Sandpoint. KREM-TV reports it was not immediately clear how many officers were involved or how many shots were fired.
Details are few, but law enforcement did confirm that the woman was not a patient at the hospital, but was shot in the parking lot. The hospital remained opened through the evening and is still fully operational.
"I just ask for patience, especially for the people of Bonner County," Sheriff Darryl Wheeler, whose agency is leading the investigation, told KREM-TV.
Investigators remained on the scene of the fatal shooting into the morning hours.
