Over the weekend, ACHD work crews began removing buffered bike lanes that appeared on Capitol Boulevard, Idaho and Main streets May 30.
Already, the lane on Main Street has been completely removed, along with bike boxes, signage and the so-called candlesticks that physically demarcated the bike traffic from car traffic. Painted bike lane signs had been scrubbed from the roads.
The lane remained, however, on Capitol Boulevard and Idaho Street, where a few commuters were making final use of the downtown thoroughfares that will disappear this week.
So far there hasn't been any change to the lane on Capitol Boulevard, but on Idaho Street the parking spots next to the lane west of Ninth Street have been blocked by rows of no parking signs.
Near the confluence of Main and Idaho streets, and Warm Springs Boulevard and Broadway Avenue, a now-familiar sign reading "Bike Lane Demo Project" points the way to a bike lane that soon won't exist.
The ACHD bike lane pilot project began May 1. After a June 4 ACHD Board of Commissioners meeting, the project was discontinued. That discontinuation was affirmed by the board again June 6. Accompanying the lanes was a public opinion poll; over its monthlong duration it revealed that the lanes had a 45 percent approval rating. Nevertheless, at the regularly scheduled ACHD meeting where the lane project was discontinued, public testimony was heavily in favor of extending the project through the summer.
