Is there anything else that can go wrong with the Sochi Olympics?
The Russian winter games kicked off with a head-scratching opening ceremony and have since been plagued by Spring-like weather, lousy conditions on the slopes, and one athlete having to punch his way out of a locked bathroom.
And now NBC has its own bit of bad news: Bob Costas, who has hosted every Olympic primetime show since 1998 and every Olympic primetime show on NBC for 26 years (CBS had a few of the winter games for a spell),will not be hosting Tuesday evening.
Costas told viewers early in the games that he had an eye infection and needed to start wearing eyeglasses in lieu of contact lenses while he continued to treat the infection with antibiotics. But, it turns out that the infection was worse than Costas had first let on. In fact, Costas called NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer to fill in for him for this evening's broadcast.
"I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we're going to have to go to the bullpen," Costas told Lauer.
On NBC"s late-night telecast Monday evening, Costas drank some vodka and said, "I'm looking at it this way ... my eyes can't get any redder."
