Tense Moments in Boise Linen District When Man Douses Himself With Gasoline

A very tense—and sad—set of circumstances led Boise Police to block off a square of Boise's downtown core this afternoon.

A report of a man, making threats to harm himself and possibly others, sent law enforcement, including tactical units to the corner of 14th and Grove streets, near the Modern Hotel. Officers blocked off traffic in all directions in a two block square of 13th through 15th and Front and Main streets. Police also cautioned pedestrians, customers and owners of nearby businesses to stay inside, but there were no formal evacuations of the scene.

Boise Fire and EMS crews also responded to the scene when the man reportedly doused himself in gasoline.

Ultimately, the man peacefully surrendered and Boise Fire decontaminated him with soap and water. Privacy barriers were placed up at the scene to help protect the individual's privacy.

The individual was later taken to a nearby hospital for medical observation.
