With all of the melodrama swirling around Boise State senior Joe Southwick, who was voted off the island of Hawaii prior to Tuesday night's Hawaii Bowl, the real Boise State story in Honolulu is the Boise State men's basketball team.
Playing some of their best hoops of the year, the Broncos handily defeated South Carolina, 80-54, Dec. 23 at the Diamond Head invitational tournament, meaning Boise State will play for the championship Wednesday night against the undefeated Iowa State Cyclones. Following back-to-back wins on Sunday and Monday, Boise State will get a day of rest Christmas Eve. The Wednesday championship will be televised Wednesday, Dec. 25, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Mountain Time on ESPN 2.
Meanwhile, Boise State officials issued a statement late Dec. 23 concerning their decision to bounce Southwick from Tuesday night's Hawaii Bowl Game versus Oregon State.
Southwick told KTVB-7 that he was wrongly accused of inappropriate behavior.
But the university wrote that it had "investigated the matter with university administrators, coaching staff, a law enforcement official, hotel security and student-athletes. We made the decision to send the student-athlete home, and we stand by this difficult decision,”
