An Idaho Coast Guardsman, who died of injuries suffered during a Alaska rescue, was returned to Idaho Falls Dec. 23 with full military honors.

Petty Officer Travis Obendor, 28, suffered injuries while rescuing the crew from a disabled fishing vessel off the coast of Alaska in November. He died of his injuries Dec. 18.

From the Coast Guard's official release:

At the time of his injury, Waesche personnel were conducting small boat operations to assist the disabled fishing vessel Alaska Mist with 22 mariners aboard. During the first transfer of passengers, Obendorf was injured while recovering the small boat. A Coast Guard helicopter crew transported him to Cold Bay for a commercial medevac to Anchorage and further medical care. Obendorf's family arrived in Anchorage shortly thereafter.

Obendor was a graduate of Idaho Falls High School and joined the Coast Guard in 2004.

He served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Waesche, homeported in Alamedia, Calif.
