Journal: ISU Debates Nude Mural

Students at Idaho State University are currently roiled in debate over a mural that has hung inside the university's Reed Gym since 1963.

The Idaho State Journal reports that members of the Association of Students at ISU are hoping that the mural, which depicts nudes exploring a beach, should be taken down while some art students are trying to form a petition to keep the mural where it is.

The mural, crafted by former ISU art professor John Davis, depicts an ancient people exploring the water's edge in Southeast Idaho.

“That’s one of the reasons they’re nude,” former ISU art professor Don Brown told the Journal. “John was honoring their physical fitness. It depicted physically fit humans in their natural environment.”

Brown said that approximately 10 years ago, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints held a summer event on campus and asked that the mural be covered while the event was taking place.
