A California couple is behind bars at the Ada County Jail after allegedly selling 10 pounds of meth to an undercover Ada County Sheriff's Department detective.
Law enforcement said undercover detectives began investigating the couple in early July and agreed to buy 10 pounds of meth at $12,000 a pound in a July 18 deal. The pair allegedly picked up the drugs in North California and drove to a Boise home where they were arrested. Detectives found 10 sealed 1-pound bags of meth hidden inside the couple's car. Detectives also seized more than $800 cash.
24-year-old Oscar Gutierrez-Chavez and 19-year-old Areli Mejia are both charged with trafficking meth and face a preliminary hearing Monday, Aug. 3. Law enforcement said Gutierrez-Chavez may also be in the country illegally.
The crime of trafficking meth is punishable by up to life in prison.
