Press-Tribune: Homedale Woman Admits to Burning Daughter's Body

Sentencing is scheduled Tuesday, June 25 for 29-year-old Veronica Herrera who has admitted to burning the body of her 2-year-old daughter in a barrel in August 2012, after the Homedale mother said the girl died of an injury.

This morning's Idaho Press-Tribune reports that Owyhee County prosecutors say the woman's five other children are in counseling. Prosecutors reduced a charge of first-degree murder against Herrera to manslaughter. Herrera pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charge and five other felonies, including three counts of injury to a child, failure to report a death and destruction of evidence. Prosectuors said Herrera caused her other children to assist her with the burning.

In August 2012, police said Herera told them that her daughter had died due to a head injury and she burned the body of the toddler because she didn't want to lose custody of her other children.

Herrera faces up to 60 years in prison.
