This morning's Lewiston Tribune reports that courtroom watchers "let out a collective gasp as the clerk read the verdict of guilty" in Moscow's Second District Court March 22. "The victim and her friends and family members smiled at each other and exchanged hugs, while the family of Jesse Vierstra of Twin Falls sat sternely as Judge Carl Kerrick ordered that he immediately be taken into custody" according to the Tribune.
Vierstra was arrested Oct. 7, 2012 after Moscow Police received a complaint from the parents of the alleged victim, saying she had been raped outside of the Sigma Chi fraternity house on the U of I campus. According to court records, Vierstra was a former pledge at Sigma Chi, but was kicked out of the fraternity in 2011.
The jury deliberated for four hours before returning the guilty verdict.
Th judge has ordered a pre-sentence report and a psycho-sexual evaluation for Vierstra, according to the Tribune, but has not set a sentencing date. Vierstra faces a possible maximums sentence of life behind bars.
