Otter Assigns Retiring ISP Director To Assess Safety of Idaho Public Schools

In the shadow of the December tragedy in Newtown, Conn., Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter today announced that Col. Jerry Russell will take on a special assignment to assess and recommend safety and security improvements to Idaho's public schools.

Russell, who will soon retire as Idaho State Police director, will work with local law enforcement and school leaders to analyze the state of security in Idaho schools, examining existing laws and policies, as well as evaluating best practices and new ideas being used at schools in and outside of Idaho.

“It’s an extremely sensitive issue and an extremely important project, one that requires a great deal of attention to detail,” said Russell. “The first thing I’ll do is take a hard look at what’s out there and determine what needs to be done.”
