S-R: Alleged Thief's Choice: Icy River or Arrest?

Traditionally, in a battle of river vs. car, rivers almost always win. So it was no surprise that an alleged car thief chose life and being arrested instead of a good chance of being killed when he drove the car out on the frozen Spokane River Tuesday.

This morning's Spokesman-Review reports that Spokane police pursed a stolen vehicle along the north bank of the Spokane River early New Year's Day. That's when officers spotted three men in the SUV jump from the vehicle, but the driver sped over the river embankment and down to the ice.

Police said the driver, 22-year-old Ryan Pryor, exited the vehicle and plunged into the icy water, but quickly made his way back to shore, where officers patiently waited.

The Spokesman-Review reports Pryor was treated for hypothermia at a Spokane hospital before being booked on charges of possessing a stolen vehicle and attempting to elude police.
