Icy Conditions, Propane Spill Shut Down Idaho Highway Overnight

Idaho's main north-south corridor—U.S. Highway 95—was blocked through much of the night Friday after a propane spill.

Law enforcement and emergency crews responded to the hazardous spill just after 6 p.m. Mountain Time near the Lewis County town of Wichester within the Nez Perce Indian Reservation. The spill shut down traffic in both directions for a 10-mile radius. Vehicles were diverted onto Old Highway 94 by the Idaho Transportation Department.

Idaho State Police told Citydesk that the driver of a catering truck lost control of the vehicle on the icy road, spun 180 degrees and landed on the side of the load, damaging a 50-gallon propane tank, which began leaking.

The road was shut down for approximately seven hours and was reopened early this morning.
