If the Downtown Boise Association gets its way, it will begin raising its fees, beginning with a major restructuring that would assess owners rather than tenants of downtown businesses.
The Idaho Business Review reports that the DBA's fee restructure requires approval from the Boise City Council, and if lawmakers give the greenlight, the increases could go into effect as early as January 2013.
The IBR reports that the DBA wants to increase fees on properties on the edge of the downtown core, including The Basque Block, Old Boise and BODO.
Fees are assessed based on square footage and generate more than $300,000 annually.
The IBR reports that DBA wants to shift to billing owners rather than tenants "because it's easier for the organization to track the 150 relatively stable owners in downtown rather than the hundreds of businesses ... who regularly move or close." The DBA estimated that it loses approximately $70,000 per year from companies that close, relocate or have their square footage listed incorrectly.
